Housing company gets go ahead to build its own homes

(L-R) New Charter tenant board member Tom Daly, Cllr Peter Robinson and apprentice roofer Louis Tyson celebrate the final roof tile laid to new homes at Holland Road in Hyde.

A housing association in Greater Manchester has achieved a national standard to build its own homes as well as schemes for the housing sector and other developers across the country.

New Charter’s in-house building company, based in Tameside, is now recognised by the National House Building Council (NHBC) which means it can now build its own homes rather than just owning and managing them.

All the homes it builds will comply with Government standards allowing New Charter to build developments for other housing providers and private companies.

The New Charter Building Company has already started work on its first New Charter Homes scheme of nine new family homes at Holland Road in Hyde, Tameside – worth around £800,000.

These two and three bedroom houses are being built as part of the Homes and Communities Agency’s Affordable Homes programme with energy saving technology to save tenants money on their fuel bills.

They will also have driveways and gardens and be built as Lifetime Homes making them adaptable to people’s changing needs.

New Charter tenant board member Tom Daly, apprentice roofer Louis Tyson and ward councillor Peter Robinson joined contractors on site to mark the final roof tile being laid last week.

Andy Stafford, Executive Director of Homes at New Charter said: “This is a really important milestone not just for families who need new and affordable homes but for our building company because it opens up so many more exciting opportunities.

“It’s also a stamp of approval that we’re building homes to high Government standards which is reassuring for tenants and for future external clients.

“We have plans to build more homes for New Charter as part of the national Affordable Homes programmes and we will be looking at other partnerships to extend our work to other areas.”

The Holland Road homes are being delivered as part of the JV North consortium and are due for completion around September. The next New Charter scheme to be delivered by the in-house building company will be Armadale Road in Dukinfield, Tameside.
