New Charters’ current longest serving employee retiring after more than 43 years

18 November 2014
We would like to wish Paul and his family the very best indeed for a long, healthy and happy retirement.
Our current longest serving employee, Paul Wood, a Plumber with New Charter Building Company, will be retiring on 13 December, to spend quality time with his wife and family.

Paul joined Ashton Council on 23 August 1971 as an Apprentice Plumber and continued with Tameside MBC and subsequently through to New Charter.

Paul has been a fantastic mentor to many of our apprentices; lots of whom still working for us and are extremely grateful for his professional guidance.

Paul’s early years were spent working from mobiles doing overnight and weekend ‘call-outs’, working on relets and spending many years on nights for the emergency response service, alongside with, in his words, “a great set of lads”, most of whom he is still in contact with.

He also spent ten fantastic years on glazing, working in schools, public buildings and churches before moving on to fitting bathrooms and later, working for our responsive repairs team, again on emergencies.

Paul said work has always been varied and interesting, giving him the opportunity to learn all the time. We are grateful for the wealth of experience and knowledge he has been able to pass on to our apprentices and trainees.

After over 43 years’ service, Paul is presently the Group’s longest serving employee and is commended for his ongoing dedication and commitment, not only to those tenants for whom he has carried out work over the years, but also to his colleagues and the company as a whole – Thank you Paul.

Paul can now look forward to his many interests, some of which include cycling, kayaking, swimming and walking; also now only watching football (MUFC) rather than playing as he used to do for various pub teams.

He’s also hoping to spend more time at his caravan on Anglesey and travelling further afield. We would like to wish Paul and his family the very best indeed for a long, healthy and happy retirement together.
