Working at the Building Company

We are proud to be a principal employer within our local area, providing opportunities and prospects for sustainable employment.

Over 83% of our workforce lives locally within the borough of Tameside and we celebrate that our employees have been with us on average for more than 18 years

This provides assurance to both ourselves and our customers that we operate as a trusted and reliable organisation, with a wealth of highly experienced and skillful trades across all disciplines.

A successful history with our Apprenticeship Scheme has helped build sustainable communities, with the development of skills for local people.  We are able to provide the best facilities and opportunities for apprentices and trainees to undertake professional training:

  • 48 apprentices have been recruited since 2001
  • 31 are still in full-time employment with us

We have a clear commitment and continuing enthusiasm to provide life-long careers with GREAT prospects for the future.

New Charter Building Company is also particularly proud to provide continuing support for real and valuable work experience and volunteering opportunities, 176 over the past eight years, which in some instances has then led to employment with us.

Our previous successful partnership working with the ‘Wai Yin Chinese Women’s Society Construction Project’, provided paid work placements to 14 women.  This collaboration was subsequently featured both in:

‘Inside Housing’ and the ‘Kier Group and HouseMark’ 2008 publication “Embracing Diversity Good Practice Guide”.

We have broken the mould when it comes to echoing the general building and construction industry as a whole, by achieving a workforce which now attracts and employs more women within our trades professions.  This enables us to provide a service which can adapt and respond to the specific requests and needs of our current and future customers.

All of our front-line staff are equipped with the right tools to deliver a service which can respond to the diverse needs of our customers and their communities, by having to hand a pocket-sized ‘Diversity Quick Reference Guide’ and Introductory Flashcards, which are translated into 10 different languages and Braille.
